Best Old School Games: for the Nintendo 64 console

Looking back it seems remarkable that it has been 15 years since the Nintendo 64 first hit the market in North America. It seems like only yesterday I was banging my head against the wall in agitation trying to make the last leap onto the final platform to reach Bowser in Super Mario 64 (one of the most progressive and endlessly entertaining games of all time). There are too many great N64 games to easily narrow them down into a top 5 list, but I’ve done my best here. For satisfactions sake I included an “honorable mentions” section after my main choices.

5 Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (1996)

4 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)

3 StarFox 64 (1997)

2 Super Mario 64 (1996)

1 The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2000)-not only the greatest of N64 games, but one of the greatest games ever devised. A strange, dark chapter in the Link saga. If it is possible for a game to be art, Majora’s Mask is the Mona Lisa.

Honorable Mentions
Mario Kart 64 (1997); Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (1998); GoldenEye 007 (1997); Super Smash Bros. (1999); Army Men: Sarge’s Heros (1999); Pokemon Snap (1999)
